How To Valentine's Day Like A Gentleman

How To Valentine's Day Like A Gentleman

Gentlemen, Valentine's Day is fast approaching and if you're in a relationship, chances are that there is an expectation to make it special.

Well, I'm here to tell you that making a reservation at a restaurant, buying a dozen red roses, or candy from the drug store is not special, it's lame and unoriginal! Plus, romance shouldn't be reserved for just one day a year. Try thinking outside of the heart-shaped chocolate box, do something unique, and not just on Valentine's Day!

Here are some suggestions that are sure to gain you a few brownie points.

1. Instead of giving her the cliched dozen red roses, find out her favourite flower(s), and have a bouquet sent to her work, or even better, take them to her yourself. She'll be thrilled, ladies LOVE when you make them feel special in front of their friends and colleagues.

2. Make her breakfast in bed, or take her for a decadent champagne brunch. You cannot lose either way. One of our favourite decadent brunch spots in Vancouver is Notch 8 in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

 3. Book a couples massage or spa day just for her. Or even better, buy some massage oil, light a bunch of candles, turn on sensual music, and give her a massage yourself. I don't know of a lady that wouldn't love this! A great place to get candles and oils is from the Saje Wellness - Lovers section.

4. Take a cooking class together. It's fun, interactive, rewarding and a great bonding experience. Ladies adore men who like to cook. The Dirty Apron has some great couples cooking classes available in February.

5. Do something different and take in some culture, broaden your horizons, you never know what you'll experience together. Visiting an art gallery is a great way to do that. There are all kinds of galleries featuring everything from local artists to world-renowned exhibitions. We just attended the opening of the Takashi Murakami exhibit, The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was spectacular! I highly recommend you check it out before it ends May 6th.

6. Instead of booking a dinner reservation at a restaurant on the busiest day of the year, along with hundreds of other unimaginative men, try cooking for her. Trust me, this will be far more impactful than dining out. If you don't know your way around the kitchen, it's okay, here are a couple of hacks that will make you look like a culinary rock star.

    - Charcuterie & Wine is a stress-free way to make an impression without cooking. Check out our Pinterest page for tips on how to create a show-stopping charcuterie board.

    - A pre-cooked roast chicken dinner from the grocery store is a genius way to host her for dinner, without having to cook. Places like Whole Foods or Meindharts always have roasted chickens available. Grab one of those, along with some sides from the prepared food section, and voila, dinner is made! And be sure to get something decadent for dessert that you can share.

Don't forget to pick up a bottle or two of wine. Maybe a bottle of sparkling for pre-dinner drinks, and a bottle of her favourite wine for dinner. Create a romantic ambiance by lighting candles, put on some mood music, and wear something nice, not a t-shirt, athletic wear, or a ball cap, please! She's the one that has to look at you, give her something nice to look at.

I guarantee she'll be impressed by the thought and effort, and won't care that you didn't cook it yourself.

Romantic Dinner for Two

These are just a few suggestions to help you step up your romance game and out of the boring Valentine's Day rut that most men fall victim to.

My best suggestion is to listen to her and take mental notes of the little things that bring her joy and do that. Valentine's Day is not about spending a ton of money or making a dinner reservation, it's about showing love and appreciation by putting some effort into making them feel special, every day!
